In what can only be described as a boxing injustice, former WBO Welterweight champion Paul Williams (40-2, 27 KO) won an extremely controversial decision against Cuban amateur champion Erislandy Lara (15-1-1, 10 KO) on Saturday evening. I watched this entire fight from start to finish on HBO this evening and couldn’t believe that Williams was awarded the decision. Lara punished Williams for much of the evening connecting on countless overhand lefts to the face of Williams. CompuBox punch totals favored Lara in both total punches(224 Lara-Williams 200), power punches(178 Lara-Williams 161), and accuracy(42% Lara-19% Williams).
This fight was so lopsided, in my humble opinion, that even the announcers were talking as if this would be Williams last fight. Williams, who was coming off a knockout loss to Sergio Martinez, was overmatched all night long. Lara was quicker and more efficient than Williams for the entire fight. Williams’ face was bloody and battered by the late stages of the fight. I am not sure which fighter was more surprised by the decision of the judges, probably Williams for the simple fact that his own corner said he needed a knockdown in the 12th to win. Tough loss for Lara, but his future in the sport appears bright. Williams would be smart to avoid any type of rematch against Lara, as I can’t imagine he would survive another bout versus the Cuban.
