Thirsty Thursday: 2009 Montebuena Rioja
This edition of Thirsty Thursday picks up right where we left off last week with a new found favorite from the land of Rioja, Spain: the 2009 Montebuena (click here if you missed last week’s wine reviews).
The Montebuena was a non-researched random purchase during a recent trip to our local libations outlet that turned out to be surprisingly pleasant. 100% Tempranillo this Rioja is simplistically complex and expressive…a great wine for either casual consumption or for pairing with food. And with a retail price of around $12 you might want to consider purchasing more than one bottle at a time.
Here is my complete review:
2009 Montebuena Rioja (Spain)
Purple in color with a light lavender tinge, the 2009 Montebuena opens with a boutique of spice box, sweet blackberry, tobacco, and led pencil on the nose. The palate expresses a delightful combination of red and black cherries, brandy, and cloves along with a dry woody herbaceousness. Finishes clean and dry. Another great value from Rioja.

It’s been ages since I had a glass of Rioja… Great review, as always!
Thanks Sissi and sounds like it’s time to drink up.
You always have me wanting to run to the liquor store! Great price too, I’m looking forward to trying this one.
Thanks Linda and I think there is a good chance that this wine is distributed in your neck of the woods.
Awesome, I love a good Rioja.
It is on my list, thank god you are here .. i am woefully ignorant about the wines outside of NZ! c
Glad to be of assistance and though I know a good deal about NZ wines, i might just be calling on you for some personal recommendations.
I know very little of riojas, Jed, so these posts are a big help. I’ve not been to my wine shop of late and I’d better get over there soon or I’ll have to find a place that delivers. I won’t be able to carry it all. Drinking it, though, will not be a problem.
You could drink as you carried the wine home, or is that illegal in Chicago?
“Purple in color with a light lavender tinge” – how lovely!

Cheers.
I agree with Mandy, that’s what caught my eye as well!
Cheers
Love me a bargain wine – that actually tastes good!
Their out there….one just has to do the proper consumption based research to find them!
Sounds like a tough job.
excellent review – this wine sounds fantastic! i don’t believe i’ve ever tried it, but i’ll look for it during my next trip to the wine shop. cheers!
aaaand it appears i mistyped something + just linked to someone else’s blog. whoops!
