This week’s Thirsty Thursday continues our look Pinotage and six expressions of South Africa’s native grape varietal (click here for Part I and a detailed discussion about Pinotage).
Again, the following three wines are all uniquely different in composition and style, allowing any type of palate to enjoy Pinotage. And although each wine reviewed is a recommendation, the 2009 Southern Right received the highest accolades for being the most complete and refined expression of the varietal. Priced around $20 per bottle the wine is a must buy from our perspective.
Here is Part II of my reviews:
2009 Warwick 3 Cape Ladies Cape Blend
A blend of 36% Pinotage, 31% Shiraz, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, & 5% Mourvedre, the “Ladies” is deep maroon/berry in color and opens with a meek nose of sweet candied red fruit. The palate expresses a cornucopia of red and black berries from Syrah, along with the tannins of a Cabernet, and the subtle smokiness of a Pinotage. A solid relaxed wine that is perfect for a gradual introduction to the Pinotage varietal.

2010 Fairview Pinotage (Paarl)
Inky purple in color, Fairview’s Pinotage offers up an engaging bouquet of berry and spice (think licorice and star anise) on the nose. Flavors of black tea, spice, and current (all dark) are expressed on the palate which is wet up front with light bursts of acidity, finishing with tannins on the back half. Much more Pinot Noir that Pinotage, but still insanely drinkable.

2009 Southern Right (Walker Bay)
Light inky purple/dark ruby in color, the nose expresses subtle notes of dry tobacco leaf with inky berry fruit and fig lingering in the background. Medium bodied and polished, the wine has notes of dark red acidic fruit up front with growing tannins as the wine cascades across the palate all wrapped in a smoky tinge with a lingering tartness on the finish. The most indicative of the varietal and refined of the wines reviewed for the series, the Southern Right is dry out of the bottle, but softens as it oxidizes. Decanting recommended.
