Utah is not known as the home of high-end libations as the state has historically leaned closer to prohibition than keg parties.  Yet the “Beehive” state has recently relaxed its views on the Devil’s brews allowing creative and energetic libation lovers to make the state their home. These skilled craftspeople, like High West Distillery, are building the reputation in the regional and national marketplace that Utah should be known for more than wondrous geography and great snow.

Only a short drive up the mountain from Salt Lake City, High West’s distillery is located in the world renown ski mecca that is Park City.  Established in 2007 and located in a historically registered building that was originally a livery stable, High West has become one of the premium producers of rye whiskey in America.

Their flagship rye, Rendezvous, blends the distillery’s sophisticated 16-year-old rye with their feisty 6-year-old to create a balanced libation that can appeal to bourbon and scotch enthusiasts alike.  In fact the Rendezvous is so well crafted and smooth that it outshines every other creation in High West’s portfolio…even their 21-year-old rye.  Make it the first High West product you try and it won’t be your last.

Light tea in color the Rendezvous Rye is medium bodied, round and smooth up front with the flavors of caramel, vanilla, and candied fruits.  The back half of the palate and clean finish expresses vibrant sweet and spice notes that can be associated with cinnamon, fennel, and tea leaf.  An extremely relaxed rye to be enjoyed neat or on the rocks.

    I didn’t think it was possible to order anything to drink in Utah. If driving through I thought you had to BYO. I’m currently on antibiotics so a have to appreciate alcohol from a distance – now where’s the fun in that! xx

      Utah is far from a dry state, but there were stricter laws in the pass. One thing is for sure we would have never been able to live there is alcohol was forbidden!!

    I’m surprised as Charlie is but I’m surprised at the name too, is there French influence in Utah, or just creative license? I’m not much of a Rye drinker sadly, but I’ll cook or bake with it!

    I’ll have to take your word for this one, Jed. I’m not much of a rye drinker. Just never developed a taste for it. That’ll leave more for your to enjoy. :)
